Ken Olsen's cover story in the current (4 May 2009) print edition of the High Country News poses the fascinating question, '"Will a new political order be enough to finally bring the dams down?"
The answer: it appears more likely than it ever has been.
The breaching of these dams would give returning salmon much easier access to spawning grounds in the headwaters streams of Idaho, where relatively high elevations may provide a buffer against the vagaries of global warming.
Ah, we do live in interesting times!
"Wild fish are in a serious and depleted state and, with the influence of climate change, many stocks are doomed." -- Don Chapman, fisheries scientist and former energy company consultant (quoted in the story)
