Like David Zetland, I read The Economist, but haven't done so for as long as he has (6 years vs. 20). The cover of the current issue (27 November 2010) surprised me, as it did Dr. Z.
The banner on the cover read: How to live with climate change.
Here is another article from the issue: Adapting to climate change: facing the consequences.
I don't usually think of The Economist as being given to hyperbole about such things as global warming.
Here is what Zetland said:
In my 20 years of reading The Economist, I've rarely seen such a brutal reality check (usually they offer a comment in a debate). I think they've seen the impending disaster of the Republican-controlled US Congress and decided that it's time to start preparing graves for the bodies that will result from inaction.
I agree with his assessment: The Economist has seen the future and it's not pretty.
And it's time to do something.
Perhaps certain people will read this issue. Perhaps not.
"The whole (global warming) thing is created to destroy America's free enterprise system and our economic stability." -- Jerry Falwell
The comment trail is depressing.
Geologically speaking, this is just another of the little pop-quizzes Nature springs on us living creatures from time to time. Alas, if you fail one, you can't make it up on the mid-term.
