Both Elizabeth Royte and David Zetland told me that there is a new film about Maude Barlow and her crusade against the forces of evil...er, the commodification/privatization of water. The film is titled, Water on the Table, and it's by Liz Marshall. I have not seen it; the trailer is below or view it here (in either case you will need Adobe Flash Player 10).
David Zetland posted on the film, and after reading the following passage, his comment was 'Who makes this stuff up, anyway?'
Canadian crusader Maude Barlow has had to defend the life-or-death truth against corporate interests for years… And even today, it is a war un-won. At stake in her crusade is humanity’s own right to the liquid that sustains all life – balanced against powerful interests that insist water is just another resource to be bought and sold. In some countries where the corporate argument has prevailed, the poor can be barred from collecting rainwater.
Actually, it's probably a darn good PR person who wrote this stuff, likely the same one who listed Barlow's opponents' team on the film's WWW site. Nothing like David vs. Goliath.
But here's Maude's team. Not too shabby!
Looks like I will finally get to meet Barlow. We are both speaking at an upcoming conference in Salt Lake City. She's one of the keynoters (with Peter Gleick); I'm just a panelist on Joe Dellapenna's panel.
For my previous impressions of Barlow, try these posts: 28 April 2010; 17 March 2008.
I don't agree with everything that exits Barlow's mouth, but I admire her passion and do believe that there should be a human right to water.
I'll be anxious to see this film and provide a review. Here is my assessment of a previous film with which she was involved.
Enjoy! I've got to go now.
"Water is being depleted many, many times faster than nature can replenish it "~ Maude Barlow
Wow! According to the poll on the movie website
In my opinion water is ...
* A human right (96%, 234 Votes)
* A commercial good (3%, 7 Votes)
* I'm not sure (1%, 2 Votes)
We're democrats, right? Let the echo-chamber rule!
