Shill alert #1! I have served on a bunch (7?) of Water Science and Technology Board (WSTB). committees over 23 years. I have great regard for the work that the WSTB does, and the only complaint I have is that it does not have a good APE (acronym-producing expression). Steve Parker heads the able staff and Professor Don Siegel of Syracuse University, Chinese-Kosher chef extraordinaire, chairs the Board.
Shill alert #2! Siegel is a long-time friend, good colleague, and hydrogeologist-geochemist extraordinaire to boot, so I am going to plug his book. Help make his retirement more comfortable (no, he's not retired yet). Little-known fact: if you tell him he's a great scientist, he will cook dinner for you.
So why am I doing this? It's to serve as a prelude to posting the WSTB's 2011 report, which has a slick new format: Download WSTB2011
It is not long but gives a good review of what the Board does - conduct studies for federal agencies (mainly), private entities, and state agencies. You can also read FAQs. It is not a government agency, nor are any of the other boards of the National Research Council.
And speaking of the Board I am currently in our nation's capital for a two-day meeting of the WSTB's NAWQA Committee, charged with evaluating the plans for the third decade of the USGS's National Water Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program. WSTB's Laura Helsabeck is doing a masterful job herding cats to the Promised Land (final report).
Here is the Committee's most recent letter report. Our big final report will be out in Fall 2011.
Now I have to go to finish tonight's reading for tomorrow's meeting.
Tough, but enjoyable, way to get free meals and trips to DC. Such a deal, especially in February.
