Giving thanks....
Some information about the Tana River Delta from TheWaterChannel:
Three facts:
- It is the second most important river delta in Eastern Africa;
- It covers an area of over 126,000 km2;
- It includes four national parks.
Three challenges:
- The water availability per capita is decreasing;
- Uncontrolled sand mining is leading to degradation of the environment;
- There are severe conflicts between pastoralists and farmers.
Three resources:
- Book: Securing water and land in the Tana Basin. A practical resource book for water managers including techniques focussing on water storage, controlling soil erosion, and improving the micro climate;
- Video: How sweet is Tana's sugar? A journey to find out the impacts of large sugar plantations on the different users within the Tana Delta;
- Video: Participatory science in the Tana Delta. A mini documentary on the challenges of the Tana Delta as a wetland.
Here is the blurb about the video:
The Tana Delta in Kenya is a wetland of exceptional value but faces many challenges (reduction of the flood pulse caused by upstream hydropower dams, conversion of the land to large-scale irrigation schemes for biofuel production, etc.).
A team of Kenyan and French scientists from the Institute of Research for Development (IRD) and the Kenya Wetlands Biodiversity Research team (KENWEB) conduct multidisciplinary and participatory research to explore the possible futures of the Tana Delta.
Unfortunately, there has also been recent violence in this area. Let's hope a peaceful resolution is in the offing.
Happy Thanksgiving Day to my USA friends and happy Thursday to all others!
