Happy New Year from WaterWired! A bright sunny day in the Willamette Valley!
So was 2012 indicative of the 'new normal'? Probably not, but our local newspaper, the Gazette-Times, reported that the area's 2012 precipitation was 58.72 inches (1491 mm), 16 inches (406 mm) above average. It was the fourth wettest year on record.
The photo is from the article, taken during January 2012, when we received nearly 7 inches (178 mm) in two days.
So what's on tap (ha ha) in the water world for 2013? Try these:
1) Pat Mulroy leaves SNWA to found and head a new environmental organization, the Water Trading Foundation, aka 'WTF'.
2) It's the International Year of Water Cooperation (IYWC), which leads to unprecedented collaboration among nations.
3) The Western States Water Council decides that prior appropriation might need tweaking, saying "It's time to move Western water management into the 20th century".
4) David Zetland takes a job as staff economist for the MWD.
5) John Fleck moves from the Rio Grande basin to South Florida.
6) Emily Green joins SNWA as PR person.
7) Cynthia Barnett becomes Gov. Rick Scott's (R-FL) 'water czarina'.
8) Groundwater is officially recognized as a component of the hydrologic cycle.
9) The term 'new normal' is abolished.
How can I top those?
"Prediction is very difficult, especially about the future." - Niels Bohr
The term NEW NORMAL is abolished. … to be replaced by what new acronym with just as useless meaning …?

Happy New Year, Aquadoc, and thanks for a year of great posts from someone not paid (yet) to say it.
