Tom Toles is one of my favorite editorial cartoonists. His words bite, but his caricatures speak volumes to me.
The following appeared today, and it's great as usual. But two days after the Moore tornado, I wonder whether the timing is good.
On the other hand, if editorial cartoonists aren't pushing the envelope, then what good are they? For nothing, in my opinion.
It probably wasn't lost on many people that one of the strongest critics of climate change in Washington is Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK). Both he and Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) voted against aid to Superstorm Sandy victims.
Maybe Toles is spot-on after all.
"Well, let’s look at that. That was totally different. They were getting things—for instance that was supposed to be in New Jersey, they had things in the Virgin Islands, they were fixing roads there, they were putting roofs on houses in Washington, DC, everyone was getting in and exploiting the tragedy taking place. That won't happen in Oklahoma." - Sen. James Inhofe, talking about why the Moore aid bill will be different from the Superstrom Sandy bill , which he voted against.
I think Toles is spot on.

Right now, the parents of those children left unsheltered (save for heroic teachers) in their schools are going through shock and grief, which we all share. If Sandy Hook is any indicator, their feelings will soon shift to anger at the politicians and organizations who put small-government ideology ahead of building safe schools. Stay tuned!
Toles' cartoon may offend some. But, as a fine old lady, Malvina Reynolds put it, "It isn't nice to block the hallway./Isn't nice to go to jail./There are nicer ways to do things./ But the nice ways always fail."
