Year-End Infographic: The Problem With Water... Is People!

I just found this infographic on the WaterSISWEB site. It is from P.J. Dore & Company, Ltd.

The numbers look okay to me; I did not vet them thoroughly. I would quibble with the number of people lacking access to safe water. The dispute usually comes down to the difference  between 'improved' (the number given) and 'safe' (maybe double the number given). An improved water source does not mean it is safe to drink.  One source estimates the number may be as high as 1.8 billion. I am inclined to believe the 1.8B figure. The number for those who die each year from water-related diseases lost a zero somewhere along the line - the estimate is 3,6M people.

I don't like the title of the infographic. I don't see a problem with water; I see a problem with the way people use and abuse water.

Thinking about water and its importance. What a way to end 2014!

Volunteer Opportunity with ANAI in Costa Rica: Tropical Fish & Stream Ecology

Reader Kirsten Joy Harma sent me this volunteer opportunity in Costa Rica.

Asociacion ANAI is a Costa Rican nonprofit organization that has pioneered some of the world’s most successful and highly participatory community-based conservation and development initiatives.  ANAI’s Biomonitoring Program has worked for several decades to understand and protect the high biodiversity found in freshwater ecosystems in Costa Rica and other parts of Central America.  

 
The volunteer opportunity is to learn more about tropical fish and stream ecology in one of the world’s great biodiversity hot spots. The volunteer will learn from ANAI staff and trained parataxonomists from the Cabecar, Bribri, Naso and Ngobe tribes, while participating in hands-on stream surveys and conducting environmental education in Spanish.  

Minimum requirements are:

·         Availability during all or most of the period Feb. 15 – May 15.

·         Functional capability in Spanish.

·         Good health and physical condition.

·         Own insurance

·         Ability to work long hours in a hot climate.

·         Work well both in a group and independently. 

We provide:

·          Lodging at our field station in Hone Creek, Talamanca
           and in our San Jose office dormitory
           (nights of arrival and departure.)

·          Essential in-country transportation

·         Food and lodging on multi-day field trips

We don’t provide food, but there are cooking facilities at Hone Creek, and one can live fairly economically.

WaterWonks - Such a Deal! Hydrology & Earth System Science (HESS) - Recent Final Revised Papers (Open Access)

Hydrology and Earth System Sciences  (HESS) is a journal of the European Geosciences Union  I used to subscribe to it (paper copy) when I belonged to the EGU, then known as the European Geophysical Union. I dropped my subscription a number of years ago but just stumbled upon the HESS website and learned that it is now open-access, online and interactive.  Such a deal!
