Here I am still blogging and Tweeting after I said I was taking a break! We're in London now (shown here are the British Museum and another famous place) now with strong Internet in our hotel. Tomorrow we leave for a minibus tour of Wales and I suspect that some of the lodging will not have Internet, much less strong Internet.
This week's water book is The Water Legacies of Conventional Mining, by James E. Nickum, David B. Brooks, Anthony Richard Turton, and Surina Esterhuyse. It is published by CRC Press.
From the book's website:
The impact of mining is too big to ignore in a world of oversubscribed
water. This is true of conventional mining as much as – or even more than – hydraulic fracturing (fracking). The legacy issues of such mining on water have not been fully appreciated, especially the irretrievable effects mining has had on communities and ecosystems around the world through its impact on water. Yet this is not an ‘us-or-them’ problem: the wealth, influence and technical knowledge of mining interests can and must be part of the solution. All of the contributions to this volume either consider the deficiencies of existing governance structures and the need for better ones, or explore the use of new techniques to identify and evaluate social and environmental impacts.
The chapters in this book were originally published in the journal Water International.
Given the last sentence, the book is rather pricey at 90 GBP (about $115 USD).
User's Guide - if you are new to this summary: each of the items here is a Tweet from my WaterWired Twitter account for the week ending today, arranged by category. It is not a comprehensive summary of the week's water news; it is my summary.
To access a story, click on the link beginning with 'http://', 'is.gd', or 'bit.ly' (usually). Clicking on a link beginning with '@' will take you to that person's Twitter account; clicking on a link beginning with '#' (hashtag) will take you to a Twitter list containing Tweets about a particular topic. Some items may not have a hot link to a story, which is fine - it may have been just an informational item or a personal message to someone. Or, I may have screwed up and forgotten the link!
