From Josh:
Okay, back from vacation and back up to speed with a great list this week. Lots going on below, including many openings with deadlines today. There were a few questions to me about deadlines after the last email, and why the deadlines are so short, so I wanted to explain a bit about how thatworks from our end and then my own thoughts about them.
-
One reason the deadlines were so short the last weeks was because of my holiday. I wanted to ensure that the lists were getting out, but did not have the bandwidth to upload everything, so this was a little unusual. However,…
-
…another reason why some of the deadlines seem short is that we do prioritize uploading those with the shortest deadlines or those with no deadline, because you never know how long they will be open (could just be a few days – and why I encourage applying ASAP to those), but when the list comes out, it is sometimes that the jobs have been sitting on the site already for up to 6-7 days, which eats into the deadline, sometimes by a good margin, so checking the site will help with that, because…
-
…I do think, having done this list now for 8 or so years and heavily for the last 3 to 4, and this is generalizing, my perception is that the deadlines that organizations give are indeed shorter on average than in the past. Every organization is different and there are some you can depend on long deadlines (United Nations, for permanent positions), but overall it does feel like they in general they are shorter. But…
-
…there is little to be done about that, so it’s incentive to keep both your CV updated and templates of different cover letters ready so you can just adapt both to the job you’re applying for in an efficient manner.
