Water risk is an ongoing concern due to rapid population growth, urbanization, increased frequency of extreme climate events, long-term trends in sea-level rise and melting glaciers, degraded landscapes, aging infrastructure, and unequitable access to clean drinking water. Here, the term “risk” is used in its broadest sense to reflect its multidimensional nature and includes both risks from disasters such as flooding, drought, landslides, and water scarcity, as well as those stemming from infrastructure failure and public health issues. It is imperative that water professionals and the community at large come together to collaborate and share cutting-edge solutions to evaluate and mitigate future risks.
This special companion issue of Water Resources IMPACT magazine will bring together articles from across the sector to discuss novel solutions that address urgent water risks in a changing world - the theme of the 2022 Spring Conference. Articles should range between 800 and 1500 words, include non-technical content that appeals to a broad audience, and reflect the breadth of topics addressed at the conference. The articles are edited but non-refereed.
Co-editors are Charlotte Roehm and Michael E. Campana. Send M. Campana the following:
1) 13 September: ~150-word summary with title. We will advise you within one week of its suitability. You can also send a rough draft of the full article if you have one. You should get our okay before you do a rough draft.
2) 15 November - full article.
Questions? Email M. Campana. You can also call M. Campana (541-602-4085 - Pacific time). Students' and young professionals' contributions are welcomed!
NOTE: If you are unfamiliar with Water Resources IMPACT articles, read below.
We are not seeking journal-style articles but ones that are much shorter, less technical, and written in a conversational, 'story-telling' style. The audience will be water-resources practitioners and students. Even those who aren't WaterWonks read the magazine, which is published online-only. Circulation is a couple thousand or so.
Here is an IMPACT article I wrote that may help you:
Growing Up...with Managed Aquifer Recharge - recounts my 'childhood adventures' on 1950s Long Island, NY, and the 'sumps' (recharge basins) I encountered.
