Sub-Sahara Africa face an accelerating crisis of water poverty. The population of the region continues to grow, even as climate change spells more frequent and intense droughts. The water infrastructure in many areas is woefully underdeveloped, and the shortage of water professionals in the region makes addressing these challenges a tall order.

Many people continue to lack access to clean water, especially in rural areas. A 2019 report by the World Health Organization indicates that most recent improvements to the African water supply have been concentrated in urban centers, where many more people have benefited from services than in rural areas where the population density is much lower. Indeed, because of the steep costs and difficult hydrogeological terrain in the center part of the continent, many funders have stopped programs to develop rural water supplies altogether. As droughts become more frequent and intense, rural populations migrate to the cities, which puts more strain on existing supplies and infrastructure. On the coast, where most African cities are located, seawater intrusion is an ever increasing to risk to groundwater sources.

Taken together, these problems constitute a growing threat to the people and economies of Sub-Saharan countries. If new ideas are not explored for rural water users of Sub-Saharan Africa, this situation will only worsen. UniWater Education, a small Canadian charity, is partnering with African universities to address these challenges by supporting water education for Africans, in Africa.

From Hydrophilanthropist to Full-Service Groundwater Contractor in Tanzania: A Case Study in Necessity

I've known Stuart Smith for a number of years through our memberships in the National Ground Water Association. He's a smart guy who has his own firm, Ground Water Science in Ohio. What I did not know much about was his work in Tanzania to establish a firm that can take care of Tanzania's  own hydrogeological needs. 

Quite a story!

This book has just been published: Fundamentals of Water Security: Quantity, Quality, and Equity in a Changing Climate (1st Edition) by Jim F. Chamberlain and David A. Sanatini of the University of Oklahoma.

Water security is an important topic these days. Looking for a good book on the topic? Try Fundamentals of Water Security: Quantity, Quality, and Equity in a Changing Climate. I must admit that I reviewed the book for the two authors, who are friends of mine. I cannot think of a better book on the topic. Jim is using it in a course of his this term; he's teaching in the new OU Hydrology & Water Security online Master's program.

The book's blurb:

Burgeoning populations and the ever-higher standards of living for those in emerging countries increase the demand on our water resources. What is not increasing, however, is the supply of water and the total amount of water in earth’s biosphere—water that is integral to all standards of living. Fundamentals of Water Security provides a foundation for understanding and managing the quantity-quality-equity nexus of water security in a changing climate.

In a broad sense, this volume explores solutions to water security challenges around the world. It is richly illustrated and pedagogically packed with up-to-date information. The text contains chapter learning objectives, foundation sections reviewing quantitative skills, case studies, and vignettes of people who have made important contributions to water security. To further aid comprehension, end-of-chapter problems are included—both qualitative and quantitative, with solutions available to instructors. Finally, extensive references feature books, journal articles, and government and NGO reports. Sample topics discussed include:

• How the study of water resources has evolved from a focus on physical availability to include social factors and governance
• How water security affects multiple disciplines across environmental science and engineering, hydrology, geography, water resources, atmospheric science, chemistry, biology, health science, and social and political science fields
